The venue was the Spiegeltent, an old school pop-up cabaret style tent with a ton of charm, perfect for the cosmic laid-back beats put on display by the Norwegian DJ Prins Thomas. And we were lucky enough to witness an intimate three and a half hour set as part of the Perth Fringe World Festival. Prins paid homage to the great classic tunes while mixing in a nice collection smooth new age disco beats.
The gig had a great atmosphere that encouraged some inventive dance moves from some punters, even spawning a conga line at one point. The gig was said to be a sell out, but at some points, the crowd seemed pretty sparse. In all though, it was a pretty good night and a good start to the Fringe World Festival. I am excited to see what else this festival brings. Heres a few photos I took before I accidentally broke my camera in two.

Abroad pt.1: Paris

Bonjour, we just had a seriously fun time in paris and thought we'd share. We were shown briefly through the local art and music window by our friends at Tigersushi.

After soaking in all the usual Parisian landmarks we navigated our way through some shopping districts. After initially being lost we found alleyways full of great shops we highly recommend the district around Rue Vieille du Temple.

Where we also found the best falafel.

Next stop the awesome Tigersushi HQ.

After meeting the Tigersushi crew, Krikor and the lovely Charlotte showed us through Joakim's impressive studio.

A short walk away was the Tigersushi furs store. The furs is a must stop next time your on a shopping spree in Paris. You might be lucky enough to see the Scenic tshirt.

Paris is also the home of some incredible art, as we found at Fafi's latest exhibition.

That night and over the next few days we experienced the local music scene with the Fafi after party featuring Carte Blanche + Brodinski (Cobrasnake), the Breakbot Fantasy ep launch and Krikor and Jackson Tigersushi night. We were amazed by how close, tight nit and friendly the Paris music community is. Although we only experienced a brief time in Paris we were impressed by the support each label and artists gave each other. Countless modern electro icons including Gaspard, Brodinski, Surkin, Busy P, DJ Mehdi, Aeroplane, Riton, Tiga, Teki Latex, So Me and many more came to watch and support their fellow Parisian artists. Furthermore we were lucky to meet a number of them through the popular Charlotte.

Many thanks to Charlotte, Krikor and the Tigersushi crew we had a great time in Paris!

Perth producer Moments is the founder of one of Scenic's favorite blogs Warm Kitten. He's currently losing himself somewhere in the world last time we heard he was in Milan. This jet setting and time away from the hustle and bustle of Perth is reflected in his new line of edits. My favourite being his rework of Bon Iver Blood Bank (Moments 'Good Girl' Rework). This track is perfect for a lazy afternoon relaxing by the pool and i feel draws good minimal influences from James Blake.

The Holidays

Formed in 2007, Sydney foursome The Holidays quickly made their mark on the Australian musical landscape. They have share stages with The View, Jamie T, The Temper Trap, Little Red, and regularly noted as one of the nation’s most promising new acts. The bands' debut album, Post Paradise, may have been a long time coming, but it has absolutely been worth the wait.

Post Paradise is clearly a massive leap forward for The Holidays, and most importantly, an album to be consumed as a full course. It traverses genres and decades of inspiration, and brilliantly blurs the lines between indie rock, experimental, tropicalia and of course, late nights and summer days.

The band have already seen much success with their singles Golden Sky and Moonlight Hours. Here is the latest single Broken Bones. Look out for these guys when they hit up Perth for the One Movement Festival October 6th-10th.

At scenic, we love all things that sound and look great. So it's no surprise that when Enrico Policardo, an Italian photographer and film maker, emailed us the other day telling us about his amazing work, we couldn't wait to do a post. He was kind enough to answer a few questions we had:

Scenic: What set-up do you have?
Enrico: I always used Nikon film and digital cameras

S: How long have you been taking photos, and how did you start?
E: Well I'm 28 years old. It's about half my life I've been taking pictures, so I guess it's about 15 years. Why? I don't know. It's that kind of thing that happens. I mean, you see a camera and you feel that you have to put your eyes in it, and after, you can't live without looking through a viewfinder (and through different lenses of course.)

S: Are you working on any upcoming projects?

Two of Scenic's favorite Australian bands have been brought together in a dreamy union. Tame Impala has created a phased reverb-drenched cover of Midnight Juggernauts latest single 'Vital Signs'. Kevin Parker's dream-like vocals have morphed Vital signs from a place of dark electro into the sunlight. As my compatriots have previously emphasized Tame Impala are an outstanding product of Perth's music scene. My 'desire' for their long awaited LP 'InnerSpeaker' grew after every glimpse of the album displayed through their pre-release episodes. My yearning intensified after their intimate pre-tour rehearsal gig at the Norfolk. Once I bought the album it lived up to all my expectations(more on that here).

Here's a fun fact: Before Aeroplane captivated the world with their italo disco pop, they operated under the guise of Javelo. They released the 12" 'Spleen' on Claude Von Stroke's Dirtybird Records. It features a great remix by Compuphonic, a really housey number with crisp chords and a real tech/compuphonic feel. I'm 99% sure it was not released digitally but this track seems relatively good quality. Two of my favourite producers in 1 !!

Apologies for the thin content of late, there has been an assignment induced hiatus. Anyway, we went an saw Tame Impala at the Norfolk Basement on tuesday night, an intimate experience which has inspired this post.

Tame Impala's debut album is out 21st of May! pre-order it. All the tracks can be heard on their myspace if you want a little taster. In my opinion, these dudes are one of the best things to come from Perth in the last 2 years. Psych-rock at its best, a perfect combination of distorted/phased/reverb-drenched guitar weaves with Kevin Parker's dream-like vocals.

Before they storm the states supporting MGMT, the InnerSpeaker Tour kicks around Australia in the next few weeks. If you havn't been tamed, grab some tickets and get down to metros freo (don't turn up your noses) on May 27th.

I've been producing for 2 years now and Djing for over 6, originally it was just spinning drum and bass with mates and having a good time. I started playing out maybe a year ago, before that it was just house parties.

Alix Perez, Burial, Timewarp Inc, LTJ Bukem, Liam Howlett, Rob Swire, Cassian, Crazy P, Thievery Corporation, Dub Pistols, Jazzanova... to name a few

ah not really from producing but if you've ever had a vinyl addiction then you'll know what it feels like to be on the pulse!

What do you think would help the Perth scene grow?

Thats a hard one because there are so many different attributes, more local nights at hotels with a good music policy is one, maybe a new online community as well because they always seem to do well and its a great means for free promotion and feedback, for example look what Teknoscape has done for drum and bass here!

Do you have any plans for a live set in the future? or is DJing your true passion?

The rumors are true Soulwax brothers David and Stephen Dewaele, have joined forces with english born electro producer Riton and graphic designer Fergus Purcell (AKA Fergadelic) for their latest musical project, entitled Die Verboten. 'Live in Eivissa' was recorded on the island of Ibiza and takes the listener on a live disco odyssey that leaves you in a state of trance. The record has only been released on 12-inch at a staggering but worthy price of £30. The record is a true piece of art with the A-side holding the track whilst the B-side is etched with an elaborate design. Only 300 personalised copies have been manufactured making this track extremely rare.

After hearing this as the opener in G.L.O.V.E.S' Body Torque mix, i spent ages trying to track it down to little avail. 3 months down the road, here it is. Feel good chords, not so feel good lyrics but an all round cool vibe. Original is also pretty cool.

Moonbootica are Hamburg DJ's Tobitob and KoweSix, the latter of which Colab's with Kris Menace to form Black Van. (post coming soon!) Most of their records are Housey/Electro with some Hip Hop influences but i'm defintely feeling some disco through the track 'Men Of the Future.' Subtle vocoder action, pretty groovy.

Okay so I'm a huge fan of Tensnake's recent work, but I came across a remix he did several years ago (2007/2008 I think) which I really like, however it copped some serious criticism. The concern is based on the fact that the remix uses very little of the of the original track 'Camaros gang - Fuerza Major' whether or not this is a bad thing, you can decide.

This ones an amazing disco/boogie instrumental from 1982 released on the classic SAM label. I love the progression of this track, from its long drum intro, to its much more polished, warm, instrumental boogie sound by the end, yet somehow it never goes anywhere . Worth a listen.

Producers and artists that make Disco dance music have crafted the art of sampling to create dance floor destroying anthems for decades. However, over the past few years some producers have taken this art form and created a money grabbing frenzy where instead of sampling a bass line or a hook in the chorus vocals, producers have merely increased the bpm added a solid bass drum and called the track their own. Examples include 'AnyWay' Duck Sauce and 'Waves' Erol Alkan and recently 'A Lifetime Groove' Marcos Cabral & Shux. This new style of production lacks inspiration and creativity and rarely acknowledges the original artist who crafted the masterpiece.

When i was searching for the second track, 'Let's Ride' by Gonzales, i came accross this pretty funny/cool video and after some further reading discovered that Gonzales is a pretty mad pianist, musician and aquantaince to Erol Alkan and Boys Noize's Alex Rihda.

British electropop band Hot Chip release their 4th album One Life Stand today. I'm particularly a fan of the tracks Brothers, Hand Me Down Your Love and One Life Stand (featured on the December aeroplane mix) however, it doesnt really have the depth of their previous album Made In The Dark. I checked it out on iTunes and somebody had even summed it with the following: "Cold Chip have produced an off-tune, pretentious album that needs a serious rethink." Anyway, go and have a listen to these tracks, hop on itunes and buy it.

Flipper is the 3rd founding member and 'disco' leg of the Finish troupe Top Billin. He has his debut E.P? coming out on the 21st of Jan, which is today, and i've been waiting/searching/toiling over it but i cant find/buy 'cruisin' which i first experienced on the video below. This single is one sweet production.
